Filly & Smurf do Sligo part 2...

South Hiendley to Holyhead...

18 April 2026

Impatient as always I set off earlier than I anticipated, and I'm glad I did! My satnav decided that I wanted to do the first half of my journey without using motorways… taking me cross countryside right up until Manchester! Whilst cursing badly as I drove the winding roads across the Penines, the radio dj decided I needed cheering up and played the new single by Westlife! At least that made me smile.

Finally reaching a motorway, I stopped at the first service station I found for a much needed toilet, food and drink break. Thirty minutes later, and after a quick call to Fina, I was on the road again for another 2 hours before eventually reaching my hotel.

Treated myself to an evening meal, then a bath, before a very early night, with my alarm set for 5am!! Have to say that it was the most beautiful steak I've had!!

Holyhead to Dublin to Sligo...

19 April 2026

So in spite of having an alarm set for 5am I was awake at 4 (typical) and my plans for a good night's sleep didn't happen. After my free coffee thanks to Joe at the Premier Inn in Holyhead I took the 3 minute drive to the port. The wait wasn't too long, thankfully. Boarded and departed at 7.25 even though we weren't supposed to leave until 8.15!! Got what I needed from the Duty Free then found a seat and settled down to write...

I didn't realise at the the time but this photo of the sunrise at Dublin port was the promise of the weather for the week ahead.

What a day! After docking and meeting Fina at the airport McDonald's, we made the 3 hour drive to Sligo in one go. There's something about the scenery changing the closer I get, that just relaxes me.

We met up with Dympna and she is as wonderful as I remember. Of course the apartment is fantastic. Anyone wanting an AirBnB in Sligo should look no further than her two properties: one on Harmony Hill and the other on JFK Parade. I’ve stayed at both and they are truly the perfect places to stay.

This is the view from the one on JFK Parade which is where we stayed.

And this when we crossed the road.

After a rest, and of course a coffee, we walked the short distance to complete the first item from our bucket list - a meal at Flipside restaurant.

Dympna had made us a reservation via her son, Patrick, who is the manager and I'm glad she did! Although busy, it was roomy inside and felt comfortable. Then, OH MY GOD! The food was unreal, fresh, tasty and filling; the atmosphere was light and perfect, and as for the hosting… Well, I've never felt like royalty before!! Seriously, from start to finish we laughed and were spoiled by Charlie and the crew. So much so that we're back on Wednesday lol.

We finished the (exhausting) day with a sit down by the river, enjoying the sun that was still shining, before we crossed the road back to the apartment for an early night!

Strandhill, Rosses Point and Shopping...

20 April 2026

Despite one of us not sleeping all that well (bloody insomnia), we were up early and ready to go. First stop had to be Strandhill, where we grabbed a coffee to go, and I may have bought a hoodie and a t-shirt, from Shell's. Taking it down to the sea wall, we enjoyed the view whilst we had our drinks.

The view was astounding as all ways...

Of course we couldn't leave without having breakfast, so back to Shell's for the most unbelievable food. I had eggs royale and Fi had eggs benedict. It was so beautiful, and filling enough that we forgot lunch as we weren't hungry!

Dragging ourselves away from Strandhill, we made our way to Rosses Point. A quick stop at the Waiting at Shore statue then we went a little further along and found the most idyllic place! No words can describe the peace and tranquility of this little inlet.

We left there reluctantly, and headed to the apartment for a couple of hours as my health was beginning to beat me unfortunately.

After a rest we headed into Sligo town to do a little shopping. Fina was better behaved than I was lol. Another Sligo hoodie and other things from Mullaney Brothers and a few bits from Penneys later and we were done for the day. With a full day and evening planned tomorrow, we headed back to the apartment for a chilled night... once we'd collected my phone that I'd left in Penneys... 🙈 😳

An unexpected meeting...

21 April 2026

Oh what a day!!! After an amazing sleep we started the day with a drive to the Holy Well. Although small, it’s such a breathtaking place of peace, tranquility and solace. I took a few moments to light some candles for my Mum and Dad, and to say a prayer. Fina lit a few candles herself. The whole experience was very moving and I confess I shed a few tears.

We then drove the long, long way around to Lough Gill to Hazelwood Forest. I sat, contemplated life and wrote, letting Fina have her own moment of contemplation as she walked. It’s such a beautiful place and one that will always be on the must-visit list.

Taking the much shorter route we headed to Strandhill and Shells for lunch. We promised ourselves last year that we’d return for the fish and chips, and they did not disappoint!

Going into the shop side I heard a voice I recognised and after plucking up the courage I spoke to Kian Egan!! No details of our conversation, but needless to say he was such a lovely man, telling me to stop being daft for disturbing him.

Walking on air, and I admit a little emotional after that encounter, we drove to Sligo Abbey. Again a bucket list item and another I’m so grateful we managed to fulfil.

The ancient ruin is so peaceful, which is surprising considering its location in the centre of town. Photos really don’t do it justice.

After a quick walk around town, we went back home to chill and prepare for our night at the theatre! Gotta admit the view from the carpark wasn’t too bad…

The Snapper was hilarious from start to finish, with 80’s music thrown in for good measure. Although it was the visit to the Hawk’s Well that was the bucket list item, The Snapper made it so worthwhile. No photos or videos allowed during the performance so these were taken before it started.

Back home and crawled into bed at midnight. Now to see what tomorrow brings…

Folk Park, Rosses Point, Health Bar and Flipside...

22 April 2026

Bucket list time again - this time at the Sligo Folk Park. We took the long way there (thanks to SatNav issues though it seems to have been a theme when we drove anywhere), then the first thing we did was go to the café for breakfast. First ever full Irish breakfast, and definitely won’t be the last! Delicious!

Then we walked around the whole park. It was a great place, my favourite area being the old street - so beautiful and thought provoking of the old days in Sligo.

After we left there we drove to Rosses Point. I was determined to walk on the beach. I nearly didn’t as there’s a steep hill down, but I’m so glad I did.

Not sure what it is about the Sligo beaches but they feel almost spiritual. Another place I could stay all day doing nothing but relaxing, soaking in the atmosphere and contemplating everything.

Back in the car - God that hill really was steep - and after a phone call from my Relay For Life buddy Barbara, we drove into tow and bought some granola tubs from the Health Bar Sligo for lunch. So worth it! Crunchy, fresh, filling and almost healthy… almost. Walking around Sligo we met up with Mr Yeats.

Pit stop at the apartment to rest tired and aching legs then out to Flipside for dinner. We were greeted by Patrick, Dympna’s son, this time and again treated like celebrities. The food was once more off the damned scale - the most amazing, tasty grilled chicken I’ve ever tasted! And again photos do it no justice.

We went to Strandhill afterwards to try for a sunset picture, but it turned out to be a bust due to cloud cover, but we did get a wolf whistle so it wasn’t all bad. 🤭 Also found a sign that for some reason spoke to me…

Friends, Food and Fun...

23 April 2026

We had a chilled morning and breakfast at the apartment, then took a trip to Dunnes before meeting Barbara at the Abbey. From that moment the day was filled with laughter, joy and conversation. What was meant to be a quick lunch date ended up being over 6 hours of the most amazing company and scenery, and I feel truly blessed to have experienced it.

With Barbara as navigator (hmmm 🤭) we drove to Mullahgamore for lunch at The Beach Hotel. Fina had chicken tenders, Barbara fish and chips and I decided to try seafood chowder for the first time… and OMG it was gorgeous!!

We walked down the pier and took in the scenery. Again another beach area that is peaceful and tranquil. A few selfies were taken lol.

Back in the car and Classiebawn Castle - the scenery was again breathtaking just like everywhere else here. Another item off the bucket list...

Glencar Waterfall was the next stop on the trip. We had a coffee upon arrival, only moving on when the café closed! Walking towards the waterfall, Fina and I realised just how close we’d been last year when my health stopped me going further!

Finally we headed back to Sligo town, with an impromptu stop at the Famine Graveyard. Although not a lot to see there, the bronze tree and atmosphere were haunting.

After dropping Barbara at her car, we headed back to the apartment for a chilled evening.

Breakfast, Ice Cream and Pizza...

24 April 2026

My health was kicking my backside today, so we chose an easy-ish day. The weather was astounding… hot, dry and with just enough breeze to make it bearable.

We had breakfast at the Blackbird Café at Sligo Airport - another bucket list item. Amazing food and coffee with the added bonus of a beautiful view. We did spot some people we knew - though unfortunately they were only a photo on the wall 🤭.

A drive to Strandhill and an ice cream at Mammy Johnstons. The amount of HUGE, black, flying insects made it impossible for us to enjoy more than a few minutes.

We made the short drive to Strandhill Flats - somewhere we’ve both wanted to visit, especially since Fina had written about it. Small, quiet and, of course, beautiful.

A steady drive to Rosses Point where the weather and view were unbelievable. Hardly any of the insects here, so we spent a while just taking it all in.

Tea was pizza from Roberti’s (IYKYK) then we set off to see the sunset. The original plan was to head back to Strandhill, but I took the wrong road (I blame traffic and my health lol) and we went to Rosses Point instead. Not a cloud in the sky all day… until we wanted a sunset lol. Not what I expected, but still stunning.

Picnic, Coffee, Cake and Flipside...

25 April 2026

Our last full day here. The weather started out overcast, but soon cleared to another sunny day. We returned to Hazelwood for a longer walk and a picnic breakfast. Impressed myself with how far I walked, though Fi went much further.

We followed that with a ‘light’ lunch at Shell’s in Strandhill… coffee and cake 🤭!

A quick trip into town to make the last few purchases, and a new t-shirt thanks to a medical episode in Mulhaney’s…

We ended the day back at Flipside. Greeted by Patrick with a hug and again treated unbelievably. I’m not one to eat out alone, but I will definitely be doing just that in September!! Got a photo with Patrick, because why not?

A wander into Queen Maeve’s Square completed our last full day.

All Good Things...

26 April 2026

Up early to pack the last few things, load the car and set off back to Dublin… an emotional journey as neither of us wanted to leave. After dropping Fina at the airport I made my way to the port to begin the ferry, hotel, long drive trip back to Yorkshire.

The things we managed to do, places we visited, people we met and food we ate firmly cemented my desire to move to Ireland as soon as possible. We laughed, cried and I’ll be forever grateful for the day I messaged Fina on Westlife.com
